Shelter under her umbrella

It was raining heavily that evening. Unlike other days when it used to sunny and warm, rain has started suddenly. And it was surprising as it was raining during winter. I always hate the rain when it pours down without any indication because at that time we are not able to shield ourselves, no umbrella, no rain coat, etc. I really don’t like to get soaked in the rain. Besides, it becomes hard to find any cab or transportation during such time.

It has already been 6 pm and little dark outside but there wasn’t any indication for the rain to stop. I gathered some courage and came out from the office with my colleague. I planned to buy an umbrella in the shop if I could fine one and he also suggested that he would borrow an umbrella from his relative who lived nearby. And that seemed like a nice idea for the time being when we couldn’t find a cab and finding any local transportation is out of questions.

We were out in the pavement and we saw three elderly people with umbrellas coming our way. There was one elderly woman so I asked her whether I could walk with her under her umbrella. She agreed and I was little relieved that she had accepted. And my friend had taken shelter under the umbrella of another man and was walking ahead of us. When I was walking with her, she told me that she was returning from her work. She must probably be a working mother or working grandmother. A lady in a sari who is capable of handling all of her works at home and office. That was impressive! And she has a face which reflects simplicity, generosity, boldness, and intelligence (as she has put on the spectacles). She also mentioned that her home was near the market place, I thought it was a good opportunity for me to buy an umbrella for my own safety. My friend was waiting for me in the end of the Jyatha Street as the elderly man’s destination was in another direction. So I told him to wait until I come back with a new umbrella. I was glad to be under her umbrella because I felt secure while seeing other damped from rain I walked with her and searched all over the shops for an umbrella but was not able to find one. My bad luck! And foolishness because I was searching for something during off season and almost all the shops was closed due to the pouring.

She was near by her home so I was very worried and very disappointed that it was now my turn to be wet. But I was stunned when she offered me her umbrella. I didn’t believe my ears for a second. She said that I could take the umbrella for a night and return it tomorrow morning I was very glad with that offer which was for my well being. But I was little hesitating to accept the offer. Because she had known me for about 15 minutes only; before that both of us has neither seen nor talked to each other ever. Still she wanted to help someone who is totally unknown to her. I was really touched by her concern and kindness. She was simply a middle class woman and she wouldn’t be able to donate a huge amount as a charity as most of the philanthropists do. But at the second it was perfectly suitable to name her philanthropist because she has offered me her umbrella when I was in greatest need of it in that raining period. Nowadays no one is ready to help anyone without any selfishness. So I accepted her offer and promised myself that I would return it first thing in the morning tomorrow.

I returned back to the place where my friend was waiting, not with a new umbrella but with an old one which she has offered. The umbrella was old piece but strong as the owner herself. I was really very lucky to come across such a helpful person who always reminds us that there is humanity left in this world. And may be tomorrow when I see someone walking in the rain I would help him/her full heartedly, thinking of my own situation at that time.

Lets keep helping others to nourish and save the seed of humanity inside us.
