Recent crackdown in Tibet opened the eyes of people of the world. Tibetans, who are in Tibet bravely conveyed the message that Tibet’s issue can no longer be neglected. They are the real heroes, one who sacrificed their everything for the good cause–freedom. And all the world has come to know that Tibetan people are deprived of their rights in their own country, Tibet.
Being a Tibetan, I felt it is my responsibility to contribute my part this freedom movement. There are series of protest programmes everyday. One is 24 hours hunger strike taking place at Swoyambhunath, Kathmandu, Nepal, to condemn the situation in Tibet and to express soliditary to those who died in Tibet. Also to resolve the current crisis as soon as possible and I also participated in that program.Though it was a new experience for me, i felt my deep concern and was proud that I have done my part.
About the hunger strike
April 13, 2008,9:00 am-It was a fine morning. Programme started with the speech from the Chief guest. He announced that 24 hours fasting relay has begun and this will continue until our demand were fulfilled and it would start with each batch of 60 Tibetans(age 16-70+) each day who would fast from 9 in the morning until next day and again they would be replaced by another group tomorrow and the process will continue. National and international press media were present there to cover the story as it was the first day of the hunger strike. Few came to me, asked questions on which I answered without any hesitation. I told them we were not demanding for the independence of Tibet or for a separate nation but we were there to appeal China to stop the killing in Tibet, to let international media investigate the matter thoroughly and demanding basic human rights for the people of Tibet, without any hesitation. It was a sad moment for us, we are here all healthy and fine while all our Tibetan brothers and sisters are being killed there, just because they are speaking against the chinese Govt. Looking at everyone’s face, I saw a ray of hope for freedom that has kept every Tibetans alive. We know that our work won’t be counted by Chinese Govt. But still it is the hope that lead us upto here. For the Tibetans, as a matter of fact, it is a great privilege to serve their country and people.
As the time passed, the dark scenario began to conquer the sky soon. Yes, everone was hungry but still they were determined and desperate to accomplished the 24 hours hunger strike. Many were reciting mantras and few youngsters were teasing each other to kill the long and lonely moments.I saw taht even at this crucial moment, even they have not eaten anything for more than half day, they were still happy that they had done something for the people of Tibet.
Next morning, our program ended with the brief speech from the Main Chief Guest regarding the program they organised. Everyone was served with tea and daythuk(Tibetan dish). We were replaced by fresh batch of 60 Tibetans ready to take our place.
I felt that even though China is one the strongest nations in the world, through non-voilence we can achieve our goal that was our aspiration. People around the globe have supported us because we are fighting for freedom and our only weapon is truth and our innocense. Tibetans in Tibet are suffering and they are deprived of human rights. They don’t have the rights to express or right to religion. They are refugee in their own land. I felt that there is patroitism on me which has led me upto now. I felt pain, the fear, the guts of Tibetans in Tibet. Yes, it is the time for everyone to raise the voice against human rights violation.
In conclusion, let me pay my solidarity to those who have lost their lives in recent crackdown in Tibet. Their sacrifices will always be remembered by all the Tibetans in and outside the Tibet. I am honoured that I am a Tibetan which gave me a light of life, showed me there is something worth more than just a life…..It is a better to die for something than living for nothing.
